Authors Giving Back -- June 18, 2009
It makes me wonder how many famous authors give back. And I'm not just talking about to their communities. If I was as famous as King or Patterson, or someone on that same level, I would start up my own publishing house, and give only newer authors a chance to make it in the marketplace. The authors at this level have so much money flowing into their bank that they could afford to do something like this. Rowling alone made $300 million in 2008 alone. These famous authors know how hard it is to make it in this business, and therefore could really help other authors find success. Rowling, again for example, could start Rowling publishing, and give new authors in science fiction and fantasy a good start by just having her name on their products. She doesn't have to run the house, only fund it. I bet those authors would sell a lot of books!

Not Just for Kids -- June 13, 2009
photo

It never ceases to amaze me how many people I run into at signings that think that you have to be a kid to be interested in the fantasy genre. It's almost as if they can't conceptualize ideas in fantasy novels, because they aren't real, so they decide that's good enough to dismiss them. It makes me want to pull my hair out and run around in circles screaming. Is their imagination so poor that they are unable to pull themselves out of reality to enjoy something make-believe? Did something happen to these individuals when they were younger that prevented them from exploring their imaginations? Or is it the way their minds just process the information? Maybe they truly are incapable of understanding fantasy. Maybe it's a left/right brain hemisphere situation going on. But somehow, I find that hard to believe. I don't expect everyone to like fantasy, but not to even try it because you think it's something only for kids, now that's ridiculous.

Some people won't even touch a Harry Potter novel just because kids are the main characters. Say what? Is that really your excuse? Just because kids are the main characters it means it's a story only for kids? Talk about bad reasoning. Yes, a lot of times books that have kids for the main characters are written specifically for kids, but that doesn't mean the story isn't entertaining. Look around you, naysayers, millions of adults are reading Harry Potter novels. They're not pop-up books.

Then there are those who I've talked to who say, "I played D&D back in college (or high school), but I don't do that stuff any more." Huh? Why? Just because you got older means you can't still enjoy fantasy? That makes no sense either. It's almost as if they're afraid to be put into some category by their peers if they're caught reading Lord of the Rings on their lunch break. Do you really think someone's going to think less of you because you're reading a fantasy novel instead of an Obama biography?

I think some people think way too much about what others think of them, and need to get over it and start breaking down the barriers they feel they need to be behind to be accepted. In other words, grow up and enjoy all life has to offer!

Favre Embarrassing Himself -- June 11, 2009
I'm really considering burning all my Favre jerseys, and I have a bonfire pit to do it. He has sunk so low, and dragged this fiasco between the Packers and him on for so long, that I now firmly believe he is one of the most selfish, egotistical sports figures out there. He obviously is not spending enough time with his family lateley, to be flirting with the Vikings at every given moment. I used to love to watch him play, and cheered like hell when he broke just about very quarterback record out there. But Aaron Rodgers is a much better role model for kids. He's a team player, and is humble. Favre has shamed himself with his comments about Ted Thompson. He should understand, more than anybody, football is a business and your time could be up when your play starts to decline. His play was declining. His record in the postseason made him look like a fool for all the idiotic interceptions he threw. I wonder if things would've been different if Holngren would've stayed around to keep him in line. Favre being bitter is ridiculuous, considering he's the one who started yanking the Packers chain with the "I don't know if I want to come back and play next year" routine half a dozen years ago. Give me a break. I now turn off the TV every time I see his name mentioned. I think NFL sportscasters need to give his name a rest, too. They're just feeding his ego, too.

Monster Quest Watcher -- June 4, 2009
photo

Yes, of course I'm a Monster Quest watcher. I am a fantasy writer after all!  For those of you unfamiliar with the program, it airs Wednesday nights on The History Channel, and covers about every monster imaginable in the world. They've done everything from Sasquatch to Chupacabra to giant lizards. They're starting to run out of ideas, though, and are resorting to things like jellyfish and super rats. I think if they're getting that desparate, they should just go back to doing more bigfoot episodes, or do a little deeper digging for other weird creatures out there. Anybody else watch the show? My favorite episode so far is probably the one about the sasquatch trashing the cabin at Snowshoe Lake in Canada.

Star Trek - "Awesome" -- May 29, 2009
I'll be the first to admit that I wasn't a huge fan of the original Star Trek TV series with Shatner and Nimoy. However, I did watch it a lot growing up, and I didn't exactly hate it either. It was entertaining for its day. I became more hooked on Trek when The Next Generation came along. I guess when the special effects got better, and I got more into Science Fiction, I became more interested. The movies of the original cast didn't light me up, and to be honest, neither did the ones for the new crew either. The only one I thought was decent was First Contact. Yes, that was the one with the Borg. Deep Space Nine was okay, but I didn't see any episodes of the other spin-offs, with Hathaway or Bakula's crews.  Now, I saw the new Star Trek flick last weekend, where the original crew was recast with a young crew to show you how they all got together to run the Enterprise. I have to say, it's my favorite Star Trek movie to date. I thought the casting was excellent, the plot was solid, and it was just plain, overall, entertaining. There were some shockers, of course, which I won't divulge here, which I found rather interesting. Two of them dealt with Spock. For those of you who've seen it, you know what I'm talking about. Go see it in the theater, unless you have a big screen at home.
